Song Said to Have Been Sung by Sam       page 5

"I've got it!  I'm a genius," said Will.  "Have you ever seen a cat wag its tail?"

"Not because they are glad to see me, I certainly have not," replied Darlene.  "They only tolerate us."  With a sigh, she added,

"I've heard genius every day of my life, but I've yet to be convinced of its existence.  Just once I would like to witness genius."

Will began to run around in tight circles that seemed to grow smaller and faster by the second.  He ratcheted himself up into such a tightly wound spring that he began to stutter.

"I've got I-t-t-t.  I've got it.  It's Cog."

"Cat, Dog, Cog, what's Cog?  Pray tell!"

Although she hated to admit it, Darlene couldn't help but be caught up in Will's excitement.  Perhaps for once the poor lad was on the right track, she decided, even though she had absolutely no idea what Cog was supposed to be if anything more than a mere figment of Will's fervent imagination.  She had a premonition that Will was off on one of his jaunts into the realm of magic where it was altogether too easy to easy to lost one's way, she was afraid.

A creature in a song that Sam is said to have sung," sang a creature lazily arching it's back against Darlene's leg.

Although Darlene could almost swear that she had actually heard the song said to have been sung by Sam, she knew there was a world of difference between the hearing of and the hearing.  Perhaps the song only presented itself when magic overwhelmed one.  Perhaps the song had never existed.  Of course Will would insist that given the right type of magic, the song could very well exist.  Darlene knew that Will believed that the purpose of magic was to make the unimaginable real as if the universe had merely allowed an oversight to exist.

As Will strutted along the school path, he began to sing a song that Darlene had heard all too many times.

"I'm a genius and you darling Darlene are a moron."

So absorbed in his singing was Will that he failed to notice or feigned not to notice that Cog was cavorting.  At long last, Will did condescend to speak.

"Hello Cog," he said hoping with all the magic that he possessed that he was right.

"And how is Will the Wee Wizard?" asked Cog.
