Samuel Taylor Coleridge 

Synopsis

born 1772  died 1834

lyrical poet, critic and philosopher

His father was a vicar whom Coleridge described as pious and innocent

1795 met Wordsworth

Coleridge gradually became addicted to opium

Kubla Khan, Coleridge claimed was written as a result of an opium dream

1798 Coleridge and Wordsworth journeyed to Germany where Coleridge became

caught up in the transcendental idealism espoused by Immanuel Kant.  While in Germany,

Coleridge studied German and when he returned to the lake country, he translated into English

the trilogy Wallenstein by Friedrich Schiller.

1804 Malta - secretary to the acting governor

1813 his play Osorio was produced at Drury Lane under the title Remorse in January

1830  On the Constitution of the Church and State.

Coleridge was one of the founders of the Romantic Movement and deserves equal recognition along with Blake, Burns, Keats, Shelley, Byron and Wordsworth.
