Chicken pox Chicken pox is caused by the varicella zoster virus. The incubation period is as long as 21 days. Do not give a child, who has chicken pox, aspirin as it may cause Reye's Syndrome. Acetaminophen may help control fever, headache or muscle pain. If the patient has a temperature above 39.4° C, call a doctor. . Baking soda baths can help relieve itching sensations.
