Martian Crunch

Martian Crunch  by Minnie Teng     Grade 8     page 1

One thousand years after Mars was settled, science and technology became very strong and powerful. Martians didn’t have to walk because they could fly with a kind of shoes called “flying shoes”. Martian students didn’t have to go to school. They could stare at the computer screen; the teachers were right in the screen and taught. Students didn’t even have to leave their beds to brush their teeth or wash their faces. Everything was already set up for them. Machines, robots and computers were all automatic. They didn’t have to do anything on their own.

“Sir, Courtier Lamasavia has a new updated report for you.” One of the robots said without expression.

“Humm… Bring it up!” President Malasavaka commanded.

  “Yes, sir. Right away.”

Two seconds later, a report appeared on the president’s desk.

“Robot One, hold it up! I’m going to read it!” He pointed to one of the

  robots.

  “Sir, I’m not One. I’m One-Hundred-And-One.”

“Oh, whatever! Just hold it! Tightly!”

President Malasavaka was a plump, bossy man. Actually he was not very smart, but he was good at leading other people.

“What the heck!” President almost yelled.

“May I help you? Sir?” Courtier Lamasavia came into the office.

“Exactly. Lama, how come a million people died last month?” President asked with his saucer-eyed expression.

“Because of laziness, sir.” Lamasavia said flatly.

“Seriously, Lama! You sent me this report!”

“I am serious, sir. A million people died because they were all overweight.” Lamasavia said with compassion.

“Oh my God! Overweight? You must be joking!” Malocacaca flew into the office, laughing. He was Secretary to the President.

Lamasavia glanced at Malocacaca with a poker-faced expression.

“But still, I don’t get this.” President said.
